A leaking toilet can have unknown effects on your water bill and the environment. Many of our customers must be aware that their toilets are leaking. Most toilets begin leaking once they are around ten years of age. On average, one leaking toilet can mean an additional $70 monthly on your water bill. This can mean anywhere from $700-$1000 in utility charges a year, and it also impacts our community water in a desert state like Utah. One leaking toilet can waste up to 1300 gallons of water a month.
Sometimes, a toilet leak can be identified simply by listening to the toilet. If you flush your toilet and it continues to make noise after a minute or two, you are almost sure to leak. You can also test for a silent leak. A handy little trick is to put a couple of drops of food coloring in the back of the tank. Ensure you don’t flush the toilet and wait about 15-20 minutes. If the food coloring has leaked into the bowl, you know you have an internal leak costing you money. Promptly flush down all the colored water to avoid staining your toilet.
If your toilet is ten years old or older, it is almost always the best solution to replace the toilet. Newer models that are leaking can be repaired at a relatively lower cost. Remember that water leaks do not fix themselves. Even though it is an issue none of us want to deal with, leaks are best handled immediately. If you have one or more toilets that are leaking, call today. We are happy to send a toilet plumber to your home or business to provide a diagnosis.
