Things to look for if your toilet is leaking

Sometimes, a toilet leak can be identified simply by listening to the toilet. If you flush your toilet and it continues to make noise after a minute or two, you are almost sure to leak. You can also test for a silent leak. A handy little trick is to put a couple of drops of food coloring in the back of the tank. Ensure you don’t flush the toilet and wait about 15-20 minutes. If the food coloring has leaked into the bowl, you know you have an internal leak costing you money. Promptly flush down all the colored water to avoid staining your toilet.

What can you do if your toilet is leaking?

If your toilet is ten years old or older, it is almost always the best solution to replace the toilet. Newer models that are leaking can be repaired at a relatively lower cost.
